BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE VESSEL
Mr Toad is a 10.7m X 2.5m steel Dutch barge believed to have been manufactured in 1910 but her
original builder is unknown. She is powered by a single Mercedes four cylinder water cooled
marinised diesel engine which provides propulsion direct to the propeller via a gearbox and shaft;
the year of manufacture of the engine is also unknown but, I suspect, that it is not the original and
that it was probably fitted post manufacture.
Mr Toad is of standard Dutch barge construction with a flat bottom, or Sole, plate, curved sides to
the lower hull and straight sides above the waterline. She was originally manufactured with riveted
steel or iron and, I suspect, converted for pleasure use sometime in the 1970’s.
Mr Toad has a centre wheelhouse with the helm position to port and a sliding entrance door on each
side. The wheelhouse floor has several removable panels which give access to the engine bay below
which contains the main engine, the batteries to starboard and the fuel tank to port.
A single door leads from the wheelhouse to the rear cabin which has a fitted single bunk to
starboard.
A bi-fold door, inboard of the helm, leads to the forward cabin which has the main galley area to
starboard and the WC to port.
The WC is equipped with a composting toilet and a shower.
The galley is fully fitted with a Plastimo Neptune 2500 gas cooker to starboard and a butler sink and
instantaneous gas water heater to port (forward of the WC). There is a solid fuel stove to starboard
and a fixed double bunk (with storage under) forward. Perfect little home!
