NOW FOR SALE, we're looking for a new loving caretaker for this part of Dutch History!
31 August, 1907, our dear Tjalk was launched at the M Harring yard in Wilnis, Netherlands. The (likely) happy new owner was a Mr P. Polder who lived in Nieuwe Tonge, Zeeland, N L. It is unlikely that he had any idea that his working ship has morphed into a comfortable lovely liveaboard ship with happy retired professional sailors who have poured lots of love and imagination plus experience into her. Below is a photo of the poor derelict dame as we found her behind an autofactor's yard up the River Stour from Sandwich, Kent, UK. It took us seven years to "complete" the refit (are they ever finished?) --- we discovered that her original name was Nooit Valmaakt which, in English, is Never Finished or Never Perfect and that is the story of every ship. We named her the "SilkPurse" because she definitely was a pig's ear when we found her and like every ship, see the before and after photos. The Autofactor owner was just days away from breaking her up and sending her to China as scrap metal when we rescued her! My OAK, Barrie was a marine surveyor and we had been in the marine service business for eons and recognized the excellent hull with no thin spots and the average thickness of 6 - 8 Mil of iron. Five years ago we sailed her across the straits of Dover (six hours from Sandwich to Calais) back to her almost roots and have loved our time in Belgium. She is now for sale as we are looking to the next chapter of our lives and other boats.... YES, there are and will be more boats!! Substantial offers accepted.
Comfortable well insulated handsome Tjalk, ready for you to move aboard. All the conveniences in a beautiful floating home. This Tjalk is a much loved barge, extensively thought-out and designed for a comfortable live aboard ship, great in all climates, designed by two professional seagoing sailors. She can go to sea (with good planning) and she has crossed the English Channel twice and traveled the canals and rivers of Europe. The owners are downsizing to another seagoing vessel as they want to do more coastal sailing. We are sure there are many details we have forgot to add. Just remember that she's 113 years old with many years in service so she has dings and bangs and dents and scars -- all beauty marks of a true working craft.
Comment from professionals: WOW!!! This is a very unique and quirky barge which just oozes character making her a complete one-off. The interior is just totally unlike any other barge and makes her an absolute MUST-SEE BARGE. SilkPurse would be equally at home gently cruising through Europe as she has been doing or as a cozy live aboard with the definite WOW factor on a City Mooring. Her rental potential is considerable. This barge has lovely dimensions and the benefit of a new engine with only 380 hours on it making her ideal for a couple. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
