L’Heritage was built in 1930 for Shell as a bunkering tanker to service the Zuiderzee fishing fleet in the Netherlands, one of six boats of which only two are known to be still in use. She was converted to a canal cruiser in 1984 at Tam and Di Murrell’s boatyard in the UK. Since then she has been regularly cruising the canals of France, Belgium and the Netherlands, including overwintering in Paris in 2011 by a family of four. She is currently moored in Cambrai, France.
She has some historical interest and always attracts attention. The steering gear is thought to be original; the engine was built in 1959.
The layout includes a bedroom with a double bed, a large saloon, two berths in the forecabin, an efficient galley with gas cooker, mains fridge and under-counter washing machine. The bathroom has a full size thermostatic shower, small washbasin and electric toilet. A Webasto diesel fired hot water system supplies radiators in every compartment.
The large “walk around” engine room provides easy access to all systems. New deep cycle house batteries (200AH 24V) were installed in 2021 and are kept charged when cruising by 500W solar panels on the wheelhouse roof. New starter batteries were recently installed. A 1kW PSW inverter supplies off-grid mains power for the fridge, lighting, small items and the washing machine. Hot water is supplied from a 100L calorifer using shore power or engine heat.
L‘heritage is a practical boat, easily handled by two people. She is fully equipped with tools, life jackets, linens, many engine spares, maps, bedding and bed linen, towels, cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery etc. Ready to go! She has been used annually since her conversion, and detailed boating logs for that entire time are included. Drydocked every four years for hull inspection and maintenance; most recently in October 2021 at Atelier Fluviale in St-Usage France.
