The Captains Cabin:
Available for rent now is the Captains Cabin on the Dutch barge Hendrik. The cabin, equivalent to a one-bed flat, has plentiful period features including original woodwork, marble, and stained glass from 1933.
The Captains Cabin is comprised of a bedroom at the very aft of the boat, with standard-size double bed and thick mattress, wardrobe, storage, skylight and two opening side windows, central heating, and two sliding doors that can close off the area. The lounge features a large 3-person built in sofa, separate bucket chair, central heating fed off the main diesel boiler, plus backup replica diesel stove in its original marble fireplace, ample storage cabinets with marble tops, brand new carpeting and underlay, and smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. The lounge also features a large, opening skylight, and four side windows which let in lots of light during the day. The kitchenette area features a brand new oak countertop, combination microwave oven and grill, under counter fridge and pantry area, kettle, and large sink. The kitchenette faces the shower area with full sized shower with fantastic water pressure and large medicine cabinet. The toilet area is across the hall, with a macerating, water-saving toilet and discreet storage area.
The cabin has its own access separate from the rest of the boat, and the rental includes sole access of the aft deck with views of Tower Bridge, plus shared access of the wheelhouse (also with brand new carpeting and underlay), five meters off the water with 360 degree views of the London skyline, including Tower Bridge and Canary Wharf.
Included in the rent are council tax, electricity, water, diesel, and wireless broadband internet (Be broadband).
Suitable for one person or a couple. Non-smoking. No pets.
The boat:
MV Hendrik was built in 1933 and throughout its life has been used as goods transport for a Dutch biscuit factory, Nazi commandeered during WWII and subsequently rescued in a dramatic struggle, and most recently used as a canoeing hotel for 26 guests in Eastern Holland. The current owners bought her in 2007, sailing her across the North Sea to London and are in the process of renovating the rest of the boat into a family home. We are a young professional couple, engaged to be married, with one cat and live in a separate part of the boat from the Captains Cabin. We are therefore available and on hand should any questions or problems arise.
The mooring/area:
Hendrik is moored in a very friendly, outgoing mooring with gated access and full postal address, surrounded by beautiful floating gardens and lots of neighbourly activities, parties, and barbecues.
The mooring is located on the south bank of the Thames, just east of the Design Museum and Tower Bridge. Bermondsey, London Bridge, and Tower Hill tube stations are a short walk away, with ample bus routes along Jamaica Road and Tower Bridge. The location would make for an ideal commute into the City or to Canary Wharf.

Cornelius looks like a barge, inside and out. This is a Sipma Brothers conversion of a 1910 hull. The new superstructure follows the lines of the hull. More aesthetically pleasing than the flat-tops. Inside the decor is designed to remind you that this is a barge, not an apartment, nor a teak-lined gentleman's yacht. It is bright - helped by having good windows you can look though. Portholes look boat-like from the outside, but are pretty useless to look through from the inside.
The current owner did/oversaw, the fitting out. Key elements:
1. Aft deck with canopy. France is very hot in the summer.
2. Wheelhouse/Salon. You can all cruise along together - this is not the sentry box you get on some barges!
3. Two cabins, both ensuite, with normal sized toilets and showers , separated from each other, and soundproofed.
4. Full sized domestic appliances, all 240v, all famous brands. Four ring plate, oven, micro-wave, fridge freezer, washing machine, tumble drier,
5. Top of the range integrated electrics by Mastervolt - Generator, inverter, charger, converter, power controller, isolation transformer, service battery bank, engine batteries, bow thruster batteries.
6. Pressurised water system, hot water calorifier with heat sources from central heating, engine and electric.
7. Kabola central heating - radiators not hung conspicuously on walls, but all hidden behind doors with grills.
9. Airconditioning - separate units in cabins and wheelhouse.
10. All plumbing joints accessible. All electrics run through colour coded conduit.
12. Masses of hanging space and cupboards/drawers, plus storage under beds, and under stairs.
13. Walk around beds for easy making.
14. Telephone point for landline, satellite dish and decoder, top of the range DVD player, radio/CD player with speakers in salon, kitchen, and (soon) aft deck.
15. The car - not carried on board - is a 1994 Land Rover Discovery, in good condition |

| i'm looking to rent a canal boat within the london area where i work. i dont have vast experience of living on and caring for a boat but am hard working and learn quickly and am passionate about living on the canal . I am an artist and have done some freelance interior design work so could exchange a reasonable rent for putting in some work to the boat. I am currently boat sitting for a friend on a boat with continually cruising licence so can manage happily without mooroing. I plan to buy my own boat next summer but have to sell my house in lancashire first, so incase anyones interested could also come to a deal where i pay an initial deposit for purchase and then rent towards final downpayment in june 2010.
