Barges: DUTCH SAILING BARGE
Featured Advert! Click here for more photos and information
DUTCH SAILING BARGE Ready to live aboard, cruise and race. This extremely pretty 1907 classic Dutch Sailing Barge (Skutsje) is now for sale as the owners are buying another boat. She is called "Swarte Schaep" ("The Black Sheep"), is 15m x 3.4m and was converted from a dairy cargo vessel in 1934 after decommission. She is a lovely live aboard and has all mod cons but is much more than a floating home, being fully equipped to sail. She is lying in North Kent and has been well looked after during five years’ ownership. Specifications 15m x 3.4m riveted iron hull in very good condition. Air draft 2.1m. Draft 0.5m. 24 tons approx. Sails and engine maintained in FWO. 80hp 4 cylinder BMC Commodore engine regularly serviced. 50mm teak laid deck over steel. Teak hatch covers and roof lights. Teak lined cockpit. Teak gunnel refurbished 2008. Oregon Pine mast and spas refurbished 2006. Oak lee boards refurbished 2006. Oak rudder and tiller refurbished 2007. Partial refit 2004/2005 – very comfortable interior. Rewired and plumbed 2005. 12v lighting and 240v ring. Victron phoenix 30 amp charger. Solid fuel CH plus emersion heater. New gas hob. New Jabsco toilet. Shower over bath. 1 cabin, comfortable for two. Berths up to 5 for holidays/sleepovers. Standing headroom in saloon and under roof lights. Description In 2002 the hull was sand blasted and epoxy and two pack paint coating applied. Photographs of the bare hull showed very few pits. She was last slipped in 2003. Sails comprise white Dacron main, jip (1999), storm jip and water sail and are in reasonable condition (sail area 132m squared). The barge is gaff rigged and sails very nicely, being light on the helm (tiller : rudder ratio = 1:1). The horse is situated behind the engine box. The lee boards are raised and lowered by 2 manual winches. The 80hp 4 cylinder 1972 BMC Commodore engine starts first time and its cover (teak faced ply with solid teak top) provides a table/navigation surface. It is keel cooled (closed system - pipes along hull). The propeller is 3 blade bronze. The bronze instrument panel was fitted in 2006 and comprises log, oil pressure etc. The exhaust was partially replaced in 2008. A new steel fuel tank has been relocated to the stern. Throttle controls are beneath the tiller. Sestrel Moore magnetic compass configured for barge. The side decks are about 1.5' wide and the foredeck is 12’ both laid with 50mm teak planking and caulking. The cabin roof is comfortable sitting height with hand rails. Two hatches on the foredeck access the cabin and sail locker. A Dutch manual anchor winch (with cover) is situated at the bow and handles the 85m double link anchor chain. The barge is very light inside due to the many brass surround port holes, round and peaked roof lights. The roomy cockpit is 10' long, lined with tongue and groove teak panels above and below the all around seats/lockers with teak tops. It is lovely to sit in in the summer or on a clear night and can hold many people for entertaining. There is ample storage, gas locker and two 300 litre water tanks. There is a frame mounted on the stern for wind generator/solar panel. Refurbished teak grating covers the cockpit floor with drains to port and starboard. Woodwork refurbishment to Oregon Pine mast (new 1993) and spas (boom disassembled and glued 2002), oak lee boards (new starboard 2002), oak rudder and tiller, gunnels etc comprised stripping old varnish/treatments off to bare wood and treating with many coats of UV resistant Cetol Marine Sikkens Varnish. It is brilliant, doesn’t peel or flake and only needs a light rub with a Scotchbright pad before applying a maintenance coat once every year or so. The mast is a traditional counterweight type (weights on the bottom of mast, stepped on the hull, in the cabin) and can be lowered and raised with ease on the main winch. The tabernacle has a removable cover. The mast is supported by stainless steel forestay and twin shrouds on each side. The topping lift, main and jip halyards are controlled by the main winch which is easy to use. The main can be raised by one (strongish) person. The rigging is stainless steel in good condition. Inside, the forward section (including bathroom area) was completely refurbished in 2004 - the old interior stripped out and bare metal (hull, sides and ceiling) wire brushed and greased, then new teak faced ply interior replaced. Sheep’s wool behind the panels provides excellent insulation. Throughout the rest of the barge there is glass wool insulation. Access is from the cockpit through a centre double doorway/companionway, down two teak steps into saloon with centre double leaf table (teak with tiled top), bench seats either side and solid fuel stove at the bulkhead with kitchen/corridor. The bench seats can be slept on and have storage below and behind. The stove has a stainless steel double walled chimney with removable section outside and provides all hot water and heating. After lighting the fire, the saloon gets hot very quickly and a full tank of hot water can be obtained within about 45 minutes. The galley is to the starboard side, comprising new four burner gas hob, stainless steel work top and incorporated sink with taps. Cupboards are underneath the sink and below the side deck. The dressing room/corridor is to port and has hanging space, cupboards and shelves for clothes etc. The bathroom leads off the corridor to starboard (bulkhead with kitchen and cabin) and comprises head (new Jabsco Compact sea toilet which can be flushed using sea water or fresh), sitz bath with shower over (Gulper Whale 220 pump for waste water - no odour or leaks/condensation!). The cabin is at the bow (full width under the foredeck). There is a double (6’4’’) mattress with small shelf at the bow end and book shelf above plus another bench/bunk with large bookshelf above. The large sail locker (sails only take up ¼ of the space) with shelves can also be accessed from the cabin. There are ample cupboards, shelves and lockers (teak doors and frames) throughout the interior with radiators in the bathroom, corridor and cabin. The calorifier is contained within a small airing cupboard (forward of the stove) with walnut faced doors. Water tanks need only be filled once a week and 600 litres are ample for two people taking showers every day and for other domestic purposes. The pressurised hot water and CH systems are serviced by two 12v pumps (Jabsco Parmax 4), expansion and header tanks, fuelled by the wood/coal burning stove all of which were installed in 2004. Pipes and pumps are easily accessible under seats and in airing cupboards. The 204v 1kw emersion heater has twin coils (one free for solar water heating if desired). The Victron battery charger looks after the batteries and was installed in 2005 together with a complete rewire (12v and 24v). Lights are 12v and there are ample 24v plugs throughout with shore power access on the foredeck. Wires are encased and easily accessible (ie not behind panels). "Swarte Schaep" is in very good condition and well worth a visit. The current owners are purchasing another yacht which means that the current moorings not included nor available with this sale.
